So how does Monat work?

Monat’s active ingredient is Capixyl which is an extract from red clover. It works specifically to block the production of DHT – a hormone that we all produce more of as we age, and which leads to hair loss.

Capixyl contains a peptide that inhibits DHT, reduces inflammation on the scalp and adds proteins that work to help your body produce collagen and laminins.

Sorry! Okay, lets break this down for you. Here’s a graphic.

On the left, you see a hair follicle that is “loose” in its pore. It’s not seated tightly, the root of the hair itself is shrunken and it won’t take much for that hair to fall out.

On the right, you see a hair follicle that is more robust. It’s seated tightly in it’s pore, and the root has a strong attachment. The hair strand itself is also thicker and healthier. This is what Capixyl does. It helps the root of the hair follicles “seat” themselves more strongly into the scalp.

Okay but what exactly is that DHT stuff? And isn’t collagen for your skin? What the heck is laminin?

DHT is dihydrotestosterone (sorry, another huge word,) which is the product of a natural reaction that occurs in the body from things like aging, stress, hormonal changes, and genetics.

Your scalp produces an enzyme known as alpha 5 reductase. Testosterone reacts with this enzyme and creates DHT. DHT then reacts with the hair follicles, shrinking, clogging and thinning them until eventually they suffocate. It counteracts the formation of DHT, allowing the follicle to breathe once again, and the hair to grow longer, fuller, stronger,and younger-looking.

Collagen is what keeps your skin smooth and supple, but it’s also used to strengthen your hair and nails. Your body needs plenty of it if you want stronger hair.

Laminins are a kind of glue that hold tissues together. They’re fibers that connect the hair follicle to the scalp and help hold it down.

Okay, I understand the terms now, but what does this have to do with Monat? How does Monat work?

Capixyl is the active ingredient in all of our products. The highest concentration is in our Two-in-one shampoo & conditioner and our Intense Repair shampoo, conditioner and spray. As you use the products, the Capixyl absorbs into your scalp and blocks the DHT from clogging, shrinking and thinning your hair follicles. If you have hair follicles that are already suffering from DHT caused weakening, Capixyl will help heal them as well.
